6. Container clear, precise definitions of a level compatible with general office use.

Include a guide for its proper use, a key to pronunciation, general rules of punctuation and and capitalization (either as a separate section contained in the main body), a table of U.S. customary units of weights and measures and their metric equivalents, place names, and names of famous people.
8. Have not less than 12 cutout thumb indices.
9. Lie flat when opened.
B. Entries:
1. Main entry words shall be syllabified or hyphenated and the part of speech label or labels identified.
2. Pronunciation of the main entry word shall be indicated using a defined system of phonetic transcription and stress marks. Key words used for pronunciations shall appear throughout the dictionary.
3. In addition to definitions, the entry shall include etymologies, when known, pictorial illustrations, when needed, and/or examples of how the main entry word is used, when helpful.
4. Synonyms and antonyms shall be included in the entry when useful.
C. Printing:
1. Page format shall be 2 columns, justified, and shall be conductive to easy reference in accordance with normal commercial practice.
2. Printing of main entry words shall contrast with other forms in the entry.
3. Types shall be clear and sufficiently leaded.
4. Maps and illustrations shall be of good quality and complement and text effectively.
